My brother is trying to build muscle so he upped his calorie intake from 2000 to 3000, he doesn’t want to get huge or anything just toned, and stronger. Now he wants to know if what he eats matters, aswiil there be a difference between 3000 calories of healthy foods vs 3000 calories of unhealthy foods (chips, fried foods, etc,) WIll he gain more fat from one or the other? Question about negative calorie foods?
Since your body needs at least 1200 calories to avoid going in to starvation mode…if you ate all negative calorie foods wouldn’t your body go in to starvation mode? Or even if you ate so much that you had -500 calories a day, but you ate 1,000 calories of other food, wouldn’t you only have 500 calories a day and go in to starvation mode? Or would the calories from the negative calorie foods count as your calories before you digested them to make them negative? Sorry if this is confusing…I just don’t quite understand how people go on negative calorie food diets and don’t go in to starvation mode!

If you want to lose weight do this:
No binge eating No foods high in fat and cabs NO SODA.
Eat veggies and fruits Exercise ( you start from 200 cals of work out then up to 400 cals, you can swim, walk or jog

Weight watchers foods have better options. You would need to look at the ingredients and the nutrition facts. You should avoid foods high in saturated/trans fats and added sugars. You should also avoid partially hydrogenated oils.

Avacado is great-High calorie and loaded with “good” fat. Potatoes have lots of fiber and are a more high calorie vegetable. Cheese is also healthy and high fat. Whole grain pasta would be a good option, also high in fiber, protien, and calories.

I was at the grocery store today and the prices on these foods are outrageous! Especially the 100 calorie treats from Hostess and Nabisco the prices are through the roof!

you will lose weight, but you will be losing muscle. That is a bad plan. You should cut most of the ft out of your diet, eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and lean meat like chicken breast. 1. go to www.calorieking.com or my favorite www.mydailyplate.com and you can search calories in just about every food out there.
2. I would think sugar free would be the better option. Usually sugar just adds unnecessary calories, and it is ok to have some fat in your diet. I like to use the salad spritzers by wish bone. I think 10 sprays are only 15 calories and it gives my salad what I need.
3. Not sure about that one! I would check the sodium level on it though. If it is really high then I would say no. You could probably find out the info on one of the web sites I listed above.
4. The only fruits I usually avoid are bananas. Only because they are so high in sugar and carbs.
5. I cook mine in a skillet sometimes too. I don’t think it makes that big of a difference as far as calories go. You could also bake it at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes with some lemon juice on it and or some Ms Dash seasoning. Ms. Dash is all salt free.
6. That cereal looks good to me. You should also try Kashi GoLean it has become my favorite. When choosing cereal check the ingredients and make sure it does not have any high fructose corn syrup. Try to keep the sodium level lower, not too much sugar, high in fiber and protein.

What are some good diet friendly foods. I’ve already heard of negative calorie foods, like fruit and vegetables, but I was looking more for side dishes.
I’m looking for healthy dishes that are filling, but also low calorie and low in fat.
Slice some zucchini into a baking dish (overlapping), top with a can of diced tomatoes with italian seasoning and low fat shredded cheddar or mozzerella. Bake covered at 350 until zucchini is tender.
Roasted red or yukon gold potatoes with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and, if you like it, rosemary.
I like the spinach idea listed above – I do a similar one and it’s great.
Spaghetti squash is good. Mashed cauliflower.

I want to go on a prepacked foods diet but I cant pay Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem prices. Does anybody know of any other places that have plans for less than a day? sorry buddy thats pretty cheap for food per day. I spend – in groceries for myself. But these people are going to buy the food, cook it, package it, and ship it to you…plus make a profit on top of that. You aren’t gonna find much cheaper than Nutrisystem:
I hear the meals from Nutrisystem aren’t too good tasting but you get what you pay for.
Nutrisystem is 9.95 per month(free shipping and handling). And if you buy two months worth you get two free weeks.
Also the 3 Hour Diet(is more expensive but I hear the food taste a lot better).
3 Hour Diet is about 8(plus shipping and handling) per month with one additional week of free food.
Sorry I don’t know much about Jenny Craig. But prepackage meals are expensive and the cheaper it is the more like crap its gonna taste.(I dont know if taste is a deciding factor for you though). Nutrisystem is cheaper but like I said the food doesn’t taste great and its deliveried monthly(therefore not too fresh), 3 Hour Diet is all natural, better tasting, and deliveried weekly for better freshness; but is CRAZY expensive.
If you haven’t given up entirely on buying and cooking your own food:
First you should eat every three hours. Constantly eating boost your metabolism. If you skip meals your body goes into “starvation” mode since it doesn’t know when it will be fed next whenever you do eat it stores extra fat.
Remember you aren’t eating more calories you are eating the same(Well more precisely the recommended calories for your weight) but more often. Instead of three big meals, you’ll eat 5-6smaller meals. This boost your metabolism making weight loss easier.
Also try not to eat late at night try to eat dinner by 7pm definitely no later than 9pm. This is what I hear from many people and my kickboxing coach and also my kickboxing book. “We’ve asked you to eat five times a day- don’t fret. You won’t gain fat, especially if you know a thing or two about basic nutrition. Remember that eating every three to four hours revs your metabolism, which is one way your body burns calories.” – The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Kickboxing by Karon Karter and Guy Mezger.
Heres what the schedule should look like
9-10pm Light Snack if still hungry. Or you can eat it right after your Dinner.
Now as for what you should eat for these snacks and meals I’ll leave up to you here are some good ideas you can mix and match these meal items to create your own diet.
1)Cereal with Low fat milk. Something like Special K, Cheerios, or Frosted Wheats.
3)A few slices of turkey bacon, couple pancakes or few pieces of toast, a piece of fruit
-A glass of 100% Juice. Usually the cheapest pure juice is apple or orange.
1)A sandwich take your pick ham, turkey, chick, beef, pb and j, just try to avoid too much mustard, mayo, or any other sauce. Slap on some low fat cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, or whatever veggie you like and enjoy. Oh yeah try wheat bread its a lot better for you.
2)Also the same as making a sandwich buy a sub from Subway.
You can eat the sandwich with a “Grab” size bag of baked chips.
1)Grilled or baked chicken breast or fish fillets seasoned it how you please. Remove the skin do not bread the chicken or fish, fry it, or add too much salt to it. Sides: Your choice of veggies: I personally love either corn or steamed broccoli.
One baked potato avoid sour cream, adding a lot of butter, bacon bits. Try to keep it as close to a plain potato as possible. Or one potato chopped up and roasted with herbs is good too.
2)Homemade Hard or Soft Tacos: Use ground turkey instead of ground beef(if you do decide to use beef use lean beef), Romaine or Green Leaf Lettuce(healthier than Iceberg), Tomatoes, 2% Milk Shredded Cheddar Cheese, Topped with salsa is you like, wrap in perferrably corn torilla (corn is slightly better than flour, but flour is ok) or place in taco shells.
3)Grilled Hamburgers:Like before use ground turkey if not at least lean beef. Grill over charcoal it adds great flavor to the meat along with dripping off extra fat/grease if you dont not have a charcoal grill or time to grill look into getting an inside grill such as a George Foreman Grill though you do not have the same add taste from the charcoals you will still benefit from extra fats dripping off the meat. Use whole wheat buns. 2% milk cheese, and the extra veggie toppings you may like. Add additional condiments sparingly if at all. What good are hamburgers without french fries, huh? To avoid cook fries in a healthier way try frying them in olive oil(olive oil is pretty expensive though compared to corn/vegetable oil) or bake the fries in the oven. Place in a pan and use only a little vegetable oil to prevent fries from sticking and set oven to broil turning over when the fries are golden brown. The fries will be healthier than deep frying them and still have that crunchy crispy fried taste.
4)Big salad with grilled chicken. Watch the salad dressing that usually screws people up.
5)I’m not a big fan of red meat but you can eat it every so often, try to get lean beef or pork and go for grilling or baking it similar to the chicken and fish. Serve with your sides of veggies you like.
1)1-2 servings of fruit or veggies. Celery, Apples, Bananas, Raisins, just to name a few.
2)Handful of nuts lightly salted.(My favorite cashews)
3)Grab size bag of baked chips
4)2 oatmeal cookies(iced or raisin are fine too)
5)1 bag of 100 calorie snacks. They come in snacks flavors like Oreos.
6)My favorite: a fruit smoothie. I usually go to Sonic they have great strawberry banana smoothies and I see they just started a Double Berry smoothie I need to go try. And of course you can make your own smoothies at home if you wish.
9)Airpopped popcorn is actually pretty good for you. Its not until you add the butter and salt that its becomes unhealthy.
-You need to drink at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day.
-Try to drink one cup of white or green tea. I personally like Snapple’s White Tea infused with Strawberry you can buy the packages and brew at home within minutes.(Unsweetened)
-I know if you have the urge how hard it is to cut out all bad foods from your diet so for dinner you can have one diet soda or glass of crystal light
-Try to drink only 100% juice many “juices” out there are only about 20% real juice. Even then drink sparingly because many juices have a lot of sugar regardless.(You may want to try reduce sugar juices)
Try to think of it not as much of a change of “diet” than a change of your lifestyle. Most people only change their diet to reach their weight loss goals, then they end up gaining it back. You have to actually change your eating habits permenatly and healthily to keep yourself at the proper weight.
If you want to keep trying to cook your own food but keep more easily track your caloric intake I suggest the 5 factor diet. Its the same thing I said before about eating 5 times a day, but they’ll give you recipes and a log so you can monitor exactly how many calories you are intaking along with a custom fitness plan.

I was talking with a friend about dieting, and she told me that certain foods burn more calories (energy) to be digested than they add to your body, thus creating a negative calorie effect. What I mean is, these foods don’t add calories, they actually use calories to be able to be digested, but make you feel full at the same time. Has anyone tried a diet based on negative calorie foods, and was it effective?
There actually is a diet called the Negative Calorie Diet and believe it or not, it does work – sort of. I have an article on my website about this diet and why you don’t want to follow it even though it works to a degree. I’ve provided the link to the article below.
The Negative Calorie Diet is based on the idea that some foods cause you to burn more calories digesting these foods than the actual calorie content of the food itself.
It’s true that some foods raise your metabolic rate more than others do. Carbohydrate and protein, for example, contain about four calories per gram. But, the thermic effect of protein is far greater than that of carbohydrate.
In other words, some of the energy in each gram of protein is wasted as heat during the process of digestion and metabolism. While all this sounds great, here is the downfall of this diet.
If you rely on this diet alone, you will probably lose a little weight but it won’t last long. The reason is because most of the weight you’ll lose will be water and muscle – not fat (which is what you want to lose). The bottom line is this diet is just another “fad diet” that you should stay away from if you are looking for long term weight loss.

Thats an unhealthy ammount of calories to consume, something along the lines of 1000 would be better. You will never be able to maintain a 500 calorie diet so once you stop the diet you will regain any weight u lost. You do that you will lose hair and age quicker eating that little. Make lots of broth-based vegetable soups. Go on the internet and look for recipes, but most broth-based soups are simple, flavorful, low-calorie and best of all, filling! Try different variations. For example, Chinese hot and sour soup only takes chicken broth, rice vinegar, soy sauce, hot sauce and an egg but is very flavorful. Borscht (or beet soup) is a very flavorful vegetable soup and if you veggie it up, and leave off the sour cream, it’s very good.
Also, I used to expand my oatmeal serving by adding a tablespoon of wheat bran to it while cooking. It adds fiber, which you’ll need on an 800 calorie diet but doesn’t hurt the flavor. Just add cinnamon and sweetener to your oatmeal, diet margarine if allowed and there’s breakfast. Or if no marg, Butter Buds can add buttery flavor at very low calories.
Low cholesterol egg substitute will give you protein at significantly lower calories than eggs. I usually top my scrambled ‘eggs’ with salsa for added flavor. Salsa can also double as a salad dressing and you will probably be eating lots of salads. Don’t be afraid to add pickled vegetables or cooked veg to your salads for variety.
Other low calorie protein options are tofu and textured vegetable protein (or veggie meat). Either one can be added to tomato sauce to top your pasta. Ideally, your spaghetti sauce has lots of veggies and a bunch of TVP (it expands in liquid, tastes like burger, has no fat and very few calories), then serve it over a small portion of pasta. Have you looked at the serving size? 3/4 cup is NOTHING! measure it if you don’t believe me. So no, cherrios isn’t good. But product 19 is a great cereal but you can’t have alot of it though. a glass of fat free milk is very filling and only 90calories.

Okay i’m 14 years old and i’m on a 1,100 calories a day diet. So i’m going to need some “healthy, lower calorie foods” Well, my mom refuses to buy my various foods, (light Pringles, strawberries,non fat yogurt, lean cuisine meals, 100 calorie packs, ect.) because they are too “expensive” and “unnecessary”. I have decided to loose weight and I want to do it fast. As a result, I have decided to go on a 1300 calorie diet. I understand that it is a small amt of calories – however, I need to do this. I just started a 1300 calorie diet. My advice would be to write down everything you eat and drink on a food log and make sure to total the calories. Here’s what I’ve been eating (I’m vegetarian but you can add meat):
1 glass of water
2 tbs purely protein powder with 1 cup soy milk, blended. This is around 173 calories with approx. 23 grams of protein. This keeps me full for a long time.
Snack: 1 and 1/2 cup of random mixture of fruit. This is approx. 100-140 calories.
Lunch: 1 cup of vegetable soup (around 110-90 calories), salad with raisons, walnuts, grape tomatoes, blue cheese and honey balsamic vinegar with olive oil. (Approx. 250) Glass of water.
Snack: 100 calories South Beach Diet bar with 6 grams of protein.
Dinner: 1 cup of brown rice cooked (216 calories), vegetable stir fry with 1 tbs of olive oil (180 calories) and tempeh (my version of meat) with soy sauce (55-70). Glass of water
Snack: 100 calorie snack like a low fat yogurt cup
This will get you to approximately 1,300 give or take 30 calories or so. I also keep track of my protein intake and I average around 50 grams of protein per day with this diet. If you find yourself still hungry, my advise is to drink a glass of water whenever you feel hunger pangs. It works!

Why is it so important to intake lots of calories following wisdom tooth surgery?
I am having a hard time intaking 3000 calories a day and as a result I am healing slowly. I am 5’5″ and 140 and I thought I ate pretty well before but to intake 3000 calories on a soft food diet? This is especially hard because I have nerve damage in my jaw and it is very painful to eat, but netherless he wants me to forcefeed myself. I just started dieting, keeping my food intake to 1200 calories a day and I’m always hungry! I’ve been having slim fast bars in the mornings which are 220 calories a piece, and then my 100 calorie snacks during the day like they say, which only leaves me 500 calories or so at dinner and I’m always still hungry after dinner. 1200 calories is wayyy too low unless you currently weigh 100lbs. but if you weighed 100lbs you probably wouldn’t be dieting. so you are always hungry because you are technically starving yourself.
you can make better use of calories by dieting correctly. multiply your current bodyweight by 12. THAT is how many calories you should be eating to effectively diet. unless you are morbidly obese, then other factors need to be used to determine proper caloric intake.

I’ve always had trouble losing weight. I would do well for a few weeks but jump back into making poor food choices and it’s been difficult finding time to workout. What are some high calories foods for gaining weight?
I’ve been losing weight? But regardless of the cause (I have no idea why, whatever…) I need to gain. I’ve been eating peanut butter like constantly (seriously carrying a jar everywhere) and drinking milk. I’ve tried adding more eggs to my diet too..
There’ve been some breads and fruit also.
I’ve started working out more too a bit..

At your current weight, I’d recommend 1600 calories to start with. 4-5 meals if you can.
1/3 from protein 1/3 from carbs 1/3 from fats to keep it simple.
Eat like this for two weeks. If you gain weight, cool, stay there. If you do not gain weight, add 250 calories every day. Eat like that for two weeks. etc etc
This is called Outcome Based Decision Making and is very useful when trying to gain quality weight or dieting even.
Peanut butter is great isn’t it? I always eat all natural peanut butter or raw almond butter. That is very addictive!

Let’s say I’m doing a 1,500 calorie (and under) diet. If I eat 1,500 calories of junk food, then wouldn’t I STILL lose weight?
People lose weight from burning MORE calories than they eat, right?
So, would it work if I ate 1,500 calories in junk food?
You would lose weight, but be extremely unhealthy and lethargic

I wanna start the negative calorie food diet. I heard it really works, cuz a few of my moms friends tried it out, and they look Ahmazing! (compared to what they used to loose like Lol) But I wanted a full list of foods that are negative calorie, and can anyone tell me the rules to this? Like only eat 500 calories a day prior to the negative foods something like that… A website would be great!

They actually don’t exist, all food has calories. They call them negative calorie foods because they take the same or more calories to digest them than they have in them.
Celery, cabbage, watermelon, cukeumbers and a number of other veggies fit the bill. Look online for calorie contents to check out foods you want to eat and see if they’ll work. You are looking for foods with less than 15 calories per serving. I wouldn’t want to diet like that though…
